Our Philosophy

At Pacific Ridge Bernese Mountain Dogs, we believe that raising exceptional puppies begins long before they go home with their new families. During their time with us, our puppies participate in a structured Puppy Preschool program designed to build confidence, resilience, and a positive outlook on the world around them.

Our Puppy Preschool curriculum is inspired by the Empowered Badass Breeder program and focuses on providing age-appropriate experiences that help puppies develop into well-adjusted family companions.

Building Confident Puppies

From their earliest days, puppies are gently introduced to new sights, sounds, textures, and experiences in a safe and positive manner. Our goal is to help each puppy learn that new things are exciting rather than frightening.

Throughout their development, puppies are exposed to:

Household sounds and daily activities
Different flooring and surface textures
Age-appropriate obstacles and enrichment activities
New objects, toys, and environments
Car rides and travel experiences when appropriate
Positive interactions with people of various ages
Gentle handling and grooming exercises

Early Neurological Development & Enrichment

Early Scent Introduction (ESI) & Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS)

At Pacific Ridge Bernese Mountain Dogs, we utilize both Early Scent Introduction (ESI) and Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) as part of our commitment to giving each puppy the best possible start in life. These programs begin during the critical early stages of development and are designed to help puppies grow into confident, adaptable, and resilient companions.

Early Scent Introduction (ESI)

Early Scent Introduction exposes young puppies to a variety of carefully selected scents during a key developmental window. Puppies are introduced to different smells from people, animals, plants, and everyday environments, helping them become more comfortable with novel experiences as they mature.

Research suggests that early scent exposure may help strengthen a puppy's ability to process new information, build confidence, and encourage curiosity about the world around them. By gently introducing new scents at an early age, we help lay the foundation for a puppy that is better prepared to navigate new situations throughout its life.

Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS)

Early Neurological Stimulation consists of a series of gentle exercises performed during the first weeks of life. These brief activities are designed to provide mild, controlled stimulation that supports healthy neurological development during a critical growth period.

ENS exercises are intended to promote resilience, improve stress tolerance, support physical development, and encourage a puppy's ability to adapt to new experiences. Similar to the natural interactions puppies receive from their mother and littermates, these exercises help prepare puppies for the challenges and adventures they will encounter as they grow.

Socialization, Handling & Confidence Building

As our puppies grow, their world grows with them. Beginning around 2½ weeks of age and continuing until they go home, each puppy is introduced to new experiences in a safe, positive, and age-appropriate way. Our goal is not simply to expose puppies to new things, but to help them build confidence and resilience while creating positive associations with the world around them.

Starting at 17 days of age, we begin our daily 10-Step Handling exercises. These gentle interactions help puppies become comfortable being touched and examined from head to tail. They learn to accept handling of their ears, mouth, feet, nails, tail, and body skills that make future grooming, veterinary visits, and everyday care much less stressful.

As the puppies mature, they are gradually introduced to a variety of sights, sounds, surfaces, objects, and environments. They explore different textures, climb over and under obstacles, play with age-appropriate enrichment toys, and encounter common household noises such as vacuums, kitchen appliances, televisions, and doorbells. As their confidence grows, they are also introduced to outdoor adventures, weather changes, car rides, new people, children, and other appropriate experiences.

Every new challenge is presented at the puppy's pace. We encourage curiosity and problem-solving while allowing each puppy to build confidence through successful experiences. This thoughtful approach helps develop adaptable, resilient puppies that recover quickly from new situations and approach life with confidence rather than fear.

By the time our puppies are ready to go home, they have experienced a wide variety of positive interactions that provide an excellent foundation for continued training, socialization, and lifelong success with their new families.

Temperament Testing & Puppy Matching

Every puppy develops a unique personality, and understanding those differences is an important part of our breeding program. At approximately 7 weeks of age, each puppy undergoes a comprehensive temperament evaluation to help identify traits such as confidence, sociability, resilience, curiosity, human focus, recovery from new experiences, and overall energy level.

While temperament testing provides valuable insight, it is only one part of the evaluation process. Because our puppies are raised in our home, we spend every day observing their interactions, play styles, confidence, and individual personalities from the moment they are born. Combining the formal evaluation with weeks of daily observation allows us to develop a complete picture of each puppy.

Our goal is never to rank puppies or label them as "better" than another. Instead, we use this information to help ensure each puppy is placed in a home where they are most likely to thrive. Every family has a different lifestyle, activity level, and set of expectations, and every puppy has their own unique strengths.

Puppy selections are made in the order reservation deposits are received. Once the temperament evaluations have been completed, families are guided through the selection process with honest recommendations based on each puppy's individual personality and the family's goals. Whether a family is looking for a laid-back companion, an active adventure partner, or a puppy with potential for therapy, service, or performance work, our focus is on creating successful, lifelong matches.
